Ebisu Garden Place, Tokyo
I think that monuments come to fruition through a variety of connections, and have the destiny to be born in a particular form and at a particular place.
During the redevelopment project for the former site of the Sapporo Beer Meguro Brewery, it was close to impossible to complete the presentation, get budget allocations, determine the best location, and complete the work with the optimal timing. I used to play there in my childhood, right in front of the Kakezuka Elementary School I graduated from. I want to repay the people and the region through this project, as a graduate.
When I talked with a friend, he mentioned that the architect often visited a particular bar, so I waited for him there, and introduced myself. A few days later I visited the worksite, listened to an explanation of the concepts of the architect and the contractor, and made my presentation. The key point was that they wanted three pieces, working together to make the monument, representing the three firms working together to construct Ebisu Garden Place: the architectural office and two construction companies.
Today, over twenty years later, it has become a symbol of the Ebisu district, representing the solidity and strength of the local society. As I pass by every week I reach out and touch it, and I am a little bit proud of myself. But it was only possible with your help!
